Bubble Thing
A curious, ambiguous plaything to experience a bubble.
How is it like to experience a "bubble"?
Bubbles are known to be irresistibly attractive and engrossing. Can we distil and capture this experience through a physical object?
Through explorations with dichromic vinyl sheets, we created a curious, ambiguous object that invites interaction and play.

HOW IS IT LIKE TO EXPERIENCE A BUBBLE?
Bubbles have a remarkable ability to capture children’s attention and fascination for long periods of time. By mapping the various behaviours and qualities characteristic of bubbles, we explored how a plaything could embody their light-hearted, carefree nature.

We eventually decided to use 2mm-thick vinyl sheets. At a certain length, the material develops a soft, bouncy quality while still retaining a degree of stiffness.

A PLAYTHING THAT GENTLY SWAYS WITH THE WIND
We wanted to tap into the capabilities of dichroic film to simulate the visual qualities of a bubble. The shade features an iridescent filter that refracts sunlight into a myriad of colors below.

AMBIGUOUS NATURE + WOBBLY BUOYANCY
The open-ended nature of the plaything encourages immersive play and reminds us that some of the happiest discoveries are the ones you least expect.
